I find long-term, longitudinal relationships with families I care for thoroughly fulfilling. For example, it was so rewarding to be entrusted to be a PCP for four generations of a family for over a decade. We get a unique opportunity that no other job will offer—to be a part of their lives and challenges over several years. Family physicians should enable patients to be equal partners in their care by diligently listening to them, actively engaging them through motivation, and empowering them to take charge of their well-being.

I believe in the classic ‘whole person approach,’ having worked full-spectrum family medicine in a clinic, convenient care setting, as a hospitalist, and in a rehab / skilled nursing facility setting. The importance of health maintenance cannot be overemphasized. 

Health care is becoming complicated and overwhelming, especially for the younger generation. Patients need a trusted advocate to help them decide what’s best for them. The advocate should also continue to be there all along the way to help break down jargon and explain the nuances of their unique situation in simple terms.
